random facts --

alias season 2 just kicks ass. season 1 did too. i can't believe i didn't watch this show when it first started. definitely my kinda stuff.

i'm reading chuck palahniuk's diary but so far i can't get into it. i've noticed the last several books i've gotten 30 pages into i've seemed to give up on. maybe part of the problem is once i go back to the bedroom after calling it quits i usually just pass out quickly in bed. kinda the same reason i'm hardly keeping up with PTI anymore, just don't really watch the tivo quite as much i guess. it's kinda amazing how much tv we download lately, we've become 100% reliant on it.

i may be a good 6 months behind (hell, i'm usually a lot more behind than that) but gran turismo 4 is pretty fun. i'm still amazed (ever since GT1) at how long it takes to get things done in that game, but still fun ever since '97. i've been trying to squeeze in some paper mario and partners in time when i can remember. haven't played mario kart DS online in several weeks now, kinda fear everybody will kick my ass now, heh.

sometimes facebook just reminds me how little i bothered to really meet or get to know that many people in college. somehow i'm more social after college than during... i didn't even know that was possible.

i'll admit i'm not much for awards shows, they're typically 90% fluff, way too long and just overly boring television. i'd rather read who won the next day online. but i was rather excited to hear that two of my favorite shows, nbc's the office and showtime's weeds both pulled in awards. the office for best actor in a comedy for steve carell, and weeds for best actress in a comedy for mary-louise parker. i had initially feared for a while that both shows would be cancelled, but looks like they're going strong for the time-being. wish we could say the same for arrested development, still dunno what's going on there.

i celebrate the workday winding down with you. i'm tired of looking at code...

i made a post last night so i don't have any rants today. instead i can tell you how i blow free time or something. that should be interesting, right?

i used to quickly bash my university's facebook [wiki entry] but it's actually pretty well done overall. unfortunately it got popular after i graduated so it's like 90% current students, not quite as useful for alumni. although somewhat ashamed i'd admit that i log into it a couple times a day to see if there's anything interesting to amble through. personally from what i've seen it beats the crap out of rubbish like myspace and friendster.

after initially not seeing the point, i've come to appreciate del.icio.us [wiki entry] for the offbeat stuff it can link you to. it's basically a social networking site with the intention of using tags to loosely categorize the content linked to. although it's more heavily used by techies, it's still a good place to find more information on one of your interests. more and more i've come to realize i prefer having bookmarks available anywhere in the world, so a lot of times i bookmark things through del.icio.us instead of locally at home or work.

there's a number of RSS feeds that i use pretty much daily at work and home. RSS feeds are basically a way of pushing data to you (such as when a webpage has been updated) instead of you traveling to the site over and over to see if anything's changed. some of my favorite random RSS feeds --

lost remote [tv/broadcast news]
TUAW [apple/mac news]
joystiq [gaming news]
tvgasm [tv recaps]
lifehacker [helpful everyday hints]
boingboing [random interesting stuff]

anyways, figured it was a good way to blow 20 minutes. ;)

figure i had to post on friday the 13th, heh. we've been so kneedeep in wedding planning stuff and a bit stressed out so i figure this wasn't the best place to vent. i will vent about something a bit more superficial though.

since last summer, there's one movie that everybody and their mother has asked me if i'd seen. unfortunately, i had neglected to see this movie, as it didn't really look that good to me. this movie is wedding crashers.

i finally got around to watching it earlier this week. is it possible for your entire world to come crashing down just from watching a 2-hour movie? i hated it. i'm not trying to be overly critical, i just hated it. and i hate that i hated it. almost everybody i know recommended i watch this movie cuz it's so terrificly funny. i wasn't offended by the movie or felt like it was beneath me, it just wasn't fuckin funny, man. i'm not sure how much more philosophical i can get about it, it just wasn't funny. i sat, i waited for the funny parts, the funny parts didn't come. while a movie like this isn't supposed to have a fantastic oscar-nominated plot, this one was so unbelievably uninteresting that i couldn't wait for it to be over.

and why do i take it so personally that i didn't enjoy this movie? cuz it makes me feel old, or too advanced or clever, or something. understand that i absolutely loved swingers, and consider it one of my favorites movies largely due to vince vaughn's character in the movie. he was absolutely hilarious in that. the problem is that movie was about 10 years ago, before he was a big deal. now it's basically the same schtick, it's just been overdone for a while now and it's a lot funnier for the 16 year old kid who's never even heard of swingers than it is for me.

if you want some real comedy, try dazed & confused, dumb & dumber, any kevin smith movie, office space, snatch or tommy boy instead. or if you need more recent, the 40-year old virgin.

you know where to console me.

hello, happy 2006. sorry for the obligatory big giant break from posting over the holidays, that's how it usually ends up going.

well i can't really think of a real fancy way to say it other than that alayna and i are now engaged. it's been a long time coming and we're just excited to move into the next phase of our relationship. if everything goes to plan we'll be married by the end of the summer, so if we don't kill each other the first half of '06 should be a bit of a whirlwind.

christmas went fine, if not a little out of the ordinary since personally i've never had a christmas day without my family. it was 5 nights in san antonio and 4 in colorado, and we were pretty thrilled once we finally got back to our own apartment. i think next year we might try to take a bit of a shorter trip, kinda felt like our precious time away from work was less enjoyed with all the traveling. there's some updated photos on my yahoo photos page if you wanna check it out.

as per usual as part of christmas i got a wad of cash from combined sources that i'd like to blow on something completely frivolous, although i haven't decided what yet. i'm looking at maybe an iBook, although i'm waiting for the macworld conference next week (where big apple product announcements are frequently made) before i commit to anything. i had also thought about maybe a flat panel tv in the bedroom instead, but i realize it'd be a pretty giant waste of cash and we don't watch tv in there too often, even though we've got the tivo hooked up in there.

i looked into upgrading to directv's new MPEG-4 high def offering but it doesn't really look like it'll gain us much. see, right now we can pull in plenty of high def goodness, but not ABC. well the problem this year is that the super bowl will be on ABC and most likely we won't be able to see it in high-definition here at the house. if we upgraded to MPEG-4 we'd get NBC, CBS and fox locals in HD (as opposed to the new york national feeds we get now) but still not ABC. we'd have to have a new set-top box as well as an upgraded satellite dish to take advantage, which right now is not at all worth the trouble. looks like we'll just go hit my parents' house and watch the super bowl over there on their 34".
